Practice profile

Chris Owens gained degrees at Cambridge University and Oxford Polytechnic, with a special interest in existing buildings. Paul Galliver gained both his degrees at Kingston Polytechnic, known for its emphasis on imaginative and thorough design. Paul and Chris established the Practice in Pangbourne, near Reading, Berkshire, in 1992, having previously been Associates at a major commercial Practice, latterly leading teams handling large scale projects.

Both Chris and Paul are Registered Architects and members of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The Practice has developed specialising in work that requires the personal interest and close involvement of the Architect, whilst benefitting from a practical and commercially aware approach, as well as inventive and appropriate design.

As Architects we analyse the requirements and context and strive for a balance between functional requirements and quality of space, looking to achieve efficiency, practicality, excitement and attractiveness so that the resulting building is both effective and desirable.

A proper understanding of, and a sympathy with, the sites and buildings are key to achieving the best possible result for our Clients. We pride ourselves on a detailed, well founded approach and have a special interest in projects where a personal dialogue with the Client is important.

As a result, much of our work including new buildings is in sensitive contexts such as

Conservation Areas and Areas of Outstanding Natural beauty, and often relates to buildings of great character and age, many of which are Listed.

Similarly many of our Clients are people and organisations unaccustomed to the process of designing and building a project and who therefore benefit from a more personal touch.

Although rooted in West Berkshire and the Thames Valley, we have completed schemes as far afield as Wandsworth, Tring, Reigate, Southampton, Bristol, Andover and Oxford. Projects range from very small up to £3 million in construction cost.

Having many years experience between us means that we are conversant with many issues raised during design and construction, for example planning policy, historic building legislation and principles, Party Walls, trees, flooding, ground conditions, highways requirements, contaminated land, legal agreements and many more.

We use a combination of media, as appropriate, including traditional drawing, Autocad and 3D design tools.
